Chapter Thirty-Two
Clover
I should have seen this coming. I mean, Iâm not a mathematician or some shit, but fuck⦠how could I not have lined up the dates? Guess I was too busy being pissed at Hunter and stressing about the fact that heâd knocked me up.
Hunterâs chef came in and prepared us what should have been a delectable feast, but Iâm about two seconds away from puking out my stomach lining. In fact, Hunterâs the only one eating and even heâs just picking at his food.
Despite everything, I have the overwhelming urge to go over to Hunter, pat him on the back and say, âwell played, olâ chum.â
But thatâs only because a person can only get so angry before they eventually become sardonic.
âOver a hundred children a year,â Hunter says.
I jerk, splashing soda water over my wrist. I press my eyes closed, willing serenity to flood me instead of an intense urge to throw my cutlery at Hunterâs head.
Kaneâs toying with a serviette, and Zeeâs scooting her cutlery around on the tablecloth with a finger. Hunterâs nursing his third scotch.
âOver three hundred children, and no oneâs doing anything about it.â
Silence settles between each of his statements like a thick, itchy blanket.
âWhen I speak to the cops, they clam up. Private investigators turn down any amount of money Iâm willing to pay.â Hunter tosses down the rest of his whiskey. âI canât let this go on.â
âWhen did it start?â Kane asks, but as if he couldn ât care less about Hunterâs answer.
âFrom what I gather, about four years ago.â
I was right; Kane doesnât even acknowledge that he heard Hunterâs answer. My gaze flashes back to Hunter. His mouth is a nearly invisible line, his eyes hooded.
âIf youâd asked,â Kane says quietly, âI could have gone to see Owen.â
Hunter sits back in his chair, sneering around a, âYeah?â He crosses his arms over his chest. âBecause I recall that turned out spectacularly, last time.â
I watch Kane from under lowered lashes. Tiny spots of white appear on his cheeks, and his jaw bunches as if heâs clenching his teeth. He doesnât look at Hunter, doesnât look at Zee, but perhaps he felt my gaze on him because a second later his gaze darts up and pins me in my seat.
Hurriedly looking away, I stand and head for the downstairs bathroom.
âEverything all right?â Hunter calls out.
I suppress a laugh. I turn around walking backward as I point to my lower belly. âYeah, I have this thing called a bladderâ¦? Not sure if youâre familiar with it at all, Doctor, but it fills up every so often.â
Hunter drops his gaze and spins his tumbler between his fingers as if he wishes it were full.
I pee, refuse to look at myself in the mirror, and head back to the table.
ââdecided to hand the baby to Father.â
I stop in my tracks. Hunter looks up at me over the top of a fresh glass of scotch.
Kane turns to me, face unreadable. âWhat? You waiting for me to give you fucking permission or something?â
My cheeks warm up.
